A Windows utility to search your Recorded TV or any other folder containing DVR-MS (Media Center Recorded TV) files and scan the metadata to identify duplicate episodes and list these with an option for easy deletion

This should work fine on any media center pc as the following are normally already installed but if you have any problems running on a non Media Center then ensure you have .Net Framework 2 and the Windows Media Format 9.0 or later runtime installed. Both can be found with your favourite search engine The latter will solve an issue where you may be told a folder does not contain DVR-MS files whereas it actually does.

This sounds interesting. I have a problem with The Daily Show - it frequently records dupes, but I don't see how this tool could help. When the dupes happen the metadata for the show looks the same. Apparently sometimes no one fills out the show details. Is there something in this tool that could still help? What does it actually check?

Hi Pete. It checks for identical show title, episode name and description. So if both shows have the same metadata in those fields it should be highlighted by this app. I'll post anentry on my blog shortly explaining why I chose those items but they are the best compromise. All I can say is give it a go - it does give you the option to check what it is going to delete and cancel if it is not what you want. Big warning though once you say yes to delete its gone.

This is the start of a really useful app; it's already saved my disk space several times. I think it would benefit from the following: (a) the ability to specify multiple folders to scan or to use the existing monitored folders, (b) the ability to choose whether to weed out the duplicates based on Original Air Date or Description or XXX, (c) ability to choose what columns to display in the grid. Keep up the good work. If you could combine this with another useful app - "Recorded TV Manager" - then it would be a real winner.

What a great application!!! Many thanks. One thought - I do sometimes get situations where one duplicates where one is a partial recording or does not have h padding. It would be useful if the app could select the duplicate(s) with the smallest file sizes and retain the largest files .. maybe that's what it does already? Please keep up the great work.

Rich H and Tony -great suggestions. This was a really quick knock up of an app to get round a specific problem I was having and I havn't had time t look at it until now. Hopefully some enhancements shortly.
